The Psalms

The links below are from the website praypsalms.org and contain some very helpful information on the daily use of the Psalms. I have found that the menus and various other links on this site are not always easy to navigate, so I’ve provided separate direct links to several pages of particular interest. While these links are primarily for our current church class on the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134), they would be relevant to anyone who desires to integrate the Psalms into their daily walk.

__________

We often look to the early church and its patterns as described in the scriptures to help inform our own patterns for daily living. In Acts 2:42 we read “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.” (NASB). The final phrase is often translated with the single word “praying” (which does read well in English) but I have chosen to use the more literal phrase “the prayers” as footnoted by the NASB. Nearly 1/3 of all the wide range of translations available online at biblegateway.com use “the prayers” because “the prayers” was most likely a commonly understood term in the early church (and Jewish synagogues) referring to to the entire book of the Psalms. Since the first chapters of the book of Acts are full of references to, or quotes from, the Psalms, and since the the writers of the New Testament make reference to the Psalms over 400 times, it is reasonable to assume that the Psalms were central to the daily life of the early church, and should, no doubt, be more central to our lives today. The early church was clearly devoted to the Apostle’s teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and to “The Psalms.”
